Mariposa Ducks

January 1, 2012

For the past three months I’ve been a witness to a great duck migration. The small pond just yards from my patio has provided a resting place for flocks of ducks ( and a few birds). Being from the northeast I knew a Mallard, Snow Geese and Canada Geese. I had a lot of fun identifying Ring-necked, American Wigeon, Gadwall, Redhead, and Canvasback ducks. And there was 1 Coot who thought he was a duck. He came with a flock of ducks, stayed for weeks and then left with a flock of ducks. The one and only Coot.
The Mariposa Ducks gallery is ready for viewing at annethroopart.zenfolio.com.

The backyard pond continues to be a place of interest because of the wildlife it attracts.  There is no natural shelter around the pond so the birds and water fowl use  it as a resting place and not a home.  The Blue Heron looked injured but he ate well for 2 days before he left.  Those beautiful Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks were here for about 20 min. before they left.  I had never seen such a duck before and it took about 24 hours before I would learn their identity.

A surprise visitor to the backyard pond yesterday kept me busy.  I am not a wildlife photographer but there are times when I wish I had a 600mm lens.  Yesterday was one of those days.  This Great Egret spent all afternoon at the pond and left around dusk.
